For the last two weeks in my MHST/ NURS 601: Philosophical Foundations of Health Systems course we have been researching and curating resources on the future of health and health care in Canada. Below is a brief summary along with the e-links of some of the interesting things that I found for the future of health and health care in Canada as well as in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Health
Seniors
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) (2017) provides their initiative to improve the health of all Canadians by focusing on the future of senior care. The CMA states, “seniors care is an essential health care issue of our time and must be a priority for the next health accord…getting seniors care right will not only lead to better health outcomes and quality of life for Canada’s elderly population but it will also result in innovations and improvements across the entire health care system, benefiting all patients” (“Improving the Health of All Canadians: A Vision for the Future”, 2017).

Diabetics
Bernhard et al. (2018) introduces employing a user-center design approach for patient centered health information technology to help with diabetes and medication self-management and enhance patient outcomes. Bernhard et al. (2018) states, “by employing a user-centered design, this study provides insight into the desired functionalities and usability of patients and health care professionals regarding a shared patient-centered, web-based medication platform, thus increasing the likelihood to achieve a functional and useful system” (Bernhard et al., 2018).
Healthcare System
Federal
Riddell (2017) expresses the concern of reformation of the Canadian health care system and suggests that, “electronic health records are a key enabler in moving the healthcare system forward… doing this effectively would result in better quality care across all aspects of the system, reducing wait times, improving disease management and assuring a more efficient system across all platforms” (Riddell, 2017).
Municipal
The new Niagara Falls hospital in Ontario is incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to identify health risks, enhance patient care, and improve work life of health care providers. Spiteri (2018) states, “AI can provide clinicians with powerful tools to identify cancer, pneumonia and heart disease risk, assist in monitoring intensive care patients, and help identify the most effective drugs for patients based on their personal genome” (Spiteri, 2018).
What are some future health and health care trends that you find interesting currently being publicized in your area?
